Ecological pyramid

The modern ecology movement almost entirely consists of three largest parties: ecodefenders, ecopopulists and ecoraiders. They are difficult to distinguish to a naked eye. But the last two categories threaten the existence of professional ecologists in the public space as well as the survival of science and ecology itself.

Ecological problems affect social and economic development of separate territories and of the entire state in an essential way. However, the very topicality of ecological matters allows those to be successfully employed in small-scale as well as global manipulations. <…> The experts are alarmed at the fact that the struggle for financial or political gains has been gaining the upper hand in the ecological movement instead of the struggle for a clean planet. The “Green” organizations are becoming influential players at the market of property repartition. And the warlike street ecologists exploit PR technologies, earning money and ratings by imitating protection of nature.

Experts point out that Russian law today fully protects the environment. It contains an entire system of provisions, which stipulate punishments for ecology offenses, including criminal and administrative liability.

Advocate Anna Kotova-Smolenskaya, Doctor at Law, Associated Partner of the Law Firm "YUST", notes: “Increasing the liability in this situation, we believe, is not the way to ensure the citizens’ rights to favorable environment. Practice shows that unfavorable conditions (excessive levels of noise, vibration, electromagnetic field and ionizing rays) in the places of human habitation result from violations of other legal norms, and not by harmful industries”.

She is of the opinion that ecology organizations should not put their strength into struggle against a factory, but rather insist on the creation of ecology maps, maintenance of which would ensure everyone’s constitutional right to truthful information on the condition of the environment.
