Lawyer for the client: clear and to the point

Lawyer for the client: clear and to the point According to Bryan Garner, head of American training company LawProse, a lawyer is first of all judged by his texts.

Adviser of YUST Law Firm Dmitry Seregin discussed ways of improving legal texts with Pravo.ru portal. The expert gave his advice about making the points clear for everyone:

"Choosing the style of a legal document, remember who is it addressed to. If it is a client with no education in the field of law, write in lay terms. The most complex legal concepts could and should be explained without professional terms. At the same time, accessibility of language does not mean deviation from “business style” and using colloquial language or slang. Court documents allow for a wider use of words of art or generally accepted terms. At the same time, it is better to avoid foreign terms if they have a Russian replacement. In any case, avoid complex constructions. Any “unintelligible” sentence that seems “indivisible” to the author may be separated at least in two simpler ones. The document will only benefit from it.”
