How to become a successful lawyer: Denis Shumsky shared his experience with future Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia graduates What are the opportunities for a Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia graduate? What career is possible for a young lawyer, and what will define their success in their chosen profession and in life as a whole? These and other questions of young lawyers - 2nd year students of Law Institute of Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia - were answered by Denis Shumsky, Head of Intellectual Property practice of YUST Law Firm.

In the first place, the prospective lawyers wanted to know what priorities they should set for themselves now, at the university stage, in order to succeed in their future career, as well as what professional area to choose.

Attorney Shumsky mentioned that Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia graduates successfully work in many firms in Russia and abroad, he is himself a Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia graduate, and it is noteworthy that the co-founder of YUST Law Firm and the current President of the Federal Chamber of Advocates Yury Pilipenko graduated from this university in 1990.

Speaking of priorities for a student and future lawyer, Denis Shumsky underlined the willingness to study and the aspiration to be the best among specialists - at first it is useful to achieve results in studies and work, then it becomes a habit and a lifestyle. In terms of practical aspects, knowledge of foreign languages is one of the essential skills. At job interviews it is important for a graduate to demonstrate reliability and responsibility, willingness to work in the firm they chose and, of course, significant knowledge of material law.

Many of the students asked for advice on choosing a field of law. According to Mr. Shumsky, the highest demand is in the field of business consulting, connected in the first place with corporate law. Such fields as criminal or family law are rather specific and not that popular, but they play a great role in the lives of people, hence the opportunities for a future lawyer are equally great. “You should follow your heart; if, for example, you are keen on family law, you should do it in life, and you will succeed”, Shumsky advised.

Denis Shumsky is a 2006 graduate of Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia (with honors), Master of Law, since 2007 - attorney, since 2011 - attorney of YUST Law Firm. More.
